The races returned in triumph last year after attracting media attention from around the globe in 2008 when they were cancelled amid health and safety fears.

Local schools have been a big part of the races but as Shrove Tuesday falls on February 16 this year – in the middle of the half-term break – organisers are reminding them as well as youth groups and businesses to get enrolled for the races and ensure the big event does not pass them by.

"It will be another great community event and we invite anyone to participate by registering with the festival office at the town hall," said Coun Bernard Bateman, chairman of Ripon Festivals.

"Our pancake races have been one of the traditions of the city for many years and received worldwide publicity when we had to cancel it over health and safety in 2008, but all is in place for a successful event this year."

The peel of Ripon Cathedral's 'pancake bell' will mark the start of the races, at 11am, with competitors racing along Kirkgate.

Army

Members of 21 Engineer Regiment from Claro Barracks will be outside the cathedral making the pancakes using ingredients organised by the Deli on Duck Hill and Mike Chambers from the Army.

Marshalling the 100-plus anticipated competitors will be the Ripon Rowels Rotary Club under the direction of its vice-president, Tim Jones.
