Thirteen children in Years 4, 5 and 6 from Burnt Yates spent two days at the remote Swarthghyll Farm in Upper Wharfedale with 16 children from Newby Primary School.

The two schools couldn’t be more different in their size and catchment area. Burnt Yates is a thriving village school with 42 children set among the fields of lower Nidderdale. Newby Primary has over 500 children and is close to busy Manchester Road in the heart of West Bowling, Bradford.

The visit was arranged by the organisation Our Space, whose aim is to bring together children from rural primary schools and those from inner city schools.

By spending time together, the children learn about the culture and background of each school and take part in joint activities that help to break down inhibitions and address preconceptions.

Judi Popplewell, acting headteacher at Burnt Yates, said the children had had a “wonderful experience”.

“Even the weather couldn’t dampen the children’s spirits,” she added.

“They are already keeping in contact via email and we hope that lasting links have been established.”
