ROAD WORKS in the centre of Knaresborough have caused chaos this week with the town centre closed off to traffic every evening.
The major programme of road works by North Yorkshire County Council is being carried out to repair potholes and cracks on road surfaces following the recent severe winter.

Mr Chris McGonigle, Urban Area Highways Manager from NYCC, said he hoped pe
ople would be patient and bear with the council whilst the work went on.

“There’s going to be a lot of pain along the way, but we hope people will understand. This maintenance scheme is important and once it is finished, these will be road surfaces that will last for a very, very long time,” said Mr McGonigle.

“The roads of North Yorkshire took a heavy battering during the winter, and we have already carried out temporary or emergency repairs to many of them,” added County Coun John Fort, Executive Member for Highways.

“There will inevitably be some inconvenience to motorists, but we will do all we can to ensure that any delays are kept to an absolute minimum.”

Knaresborough residents are reminded that High Street/York Place repairs from Bond End to Iles Lane will continue tonight.

Although additional information (including contact details) will be provided by notices put up on site before work begins on individual sections of road, and alternative routes will be signed while the closures are in place, some residents don’t feel enough notice has been given.

The council said it had made every effort to maintain access to premises for residents and businesses during the works.

The timetable for the next few weeks is as follows:-

l Bond End (High Street to High Bond End) August 2 to 5

l Bond End (High Bond End to Harrogate Road) August 5 to 9

l Park Row (High Street to Stockwell Lane) August 9 to 13

l Wetherby Road (York Road to Grimbald Crag Way) Aug 16 to 25.
