MEMBERS of Knaresborough Rotary Club visited The Forest School in Knaresborough last month to officially open the school's new Sensory Garden.
A garden design competition was held in school, and suggestions made by the school council. These ideas were put into action by volunteers from Knaresborough Rotary Club who helped create the path and turning area for wheelchair-users in the garden.
The resulting garden is a quiet sensory area which can be used by pupils at playtimes, as well as a teaching area.
Over the last year Knaresborough Rotary Club has been supporting projects at the school including the provision of a wheelchair platform swing and the sensory garden.
Funds were raised at the Young Musicians’ Competition and the Variety Show for the purchase of a wheelchair platform swing.
Rotary Club President Peter Kendall recently visited the school to present a cheque for £2,000 to members of the pupil council for the swing which it is hoped will be installed soon.
Last month, the Rotary Clubs and Inner Wheel Clubs of District 1040 (Yorkshire) invited youngsters from schools in their area to a day out at Lightwater Valley, as part of Rotary’s national “Kids Out” day.
Knaresborough Rotary Club took 28 pupils from The Forest School and the youngsters enjoyed rides, a Birds of Prey demonstration and a magician.
Staff and pupils at The Forest School had a fantastic day at Lightwater Valley and wish to say a big thank-you to Knaresborough Rotary Club for inviting them.
