ALMOST 300 cyclists have taken on a 100km ride to raise cash for a Harrogate charity group.
The Acorn 100k Bike Ride took place on a marshalled route from Bishop Monkton across North Yorkshire on May 17.
The event was officially started by bronze medal winning cyclist, Denise Burton Cole, daughter of legendary British cyclist Beryl Burton.
It raised more than £25,000 for the two charities supported by Acorn – the Alzheimer's Society's Harrogate and Ripon branch and research into Scleroderma disease at Leeds General Infirmary.
Acorn chairman Louise Hanen said: "Once again, we have been overwhelmed by the response to this year's Acorn Challenge.
"The fantastic sum raised for Acorn will help us to continue to develop the support the Alzheimer's Society gives to people with this heart-breaking disease and their carers.
"Acorn will also continue to part-fund a Scleroderma research fellow at Leeds General Infirmary and provide resources at Chapel Allerton Hospital.
"A big thank you must go to all the volunteers, sponsors and supporters for a superb team effort."
A total of 270 cyclists took on the event, which was marshalled by over 70 volunteers and received help and technical support from St John's Ambulance, Helsby Cycles and Boneshakers.
The riders were joined by two walkers who set off at 5pm the day before to complete the route on foot, raising £2,500.
Although the event was non-competitive, the fastest man was Gary Bailey, who completed the course in 2 hours and 45 minutes. The fastest woman was Caroline Lightbody.
Event sponsors and supporters included www.lights4fun.com, Regal Fruiterers, Waitrose, Asda, Nestle Rowntree, Seabrook Crisps, Imageco and Marsland Timber.
Local business teams included The Fisher Partnership, Imageco, Airedale Mechanical Engineering and Knight Frank, as well as a team from the Rheumatology Department of Leeds General Infirmary.
